SSG Pete Peterie

Esten Ray “Pete” Peterie was born on January 15, 1917, in Farmington, IA and died on February 4, 1998, at his home in Farmington, Iowa, at the age of 81. He was the son of Bart and Ethel Harness Peterie. He had been a resident of Farmington, IA, since 1981. He had been employed at White McCoy Hatchery in Kahoka, MO, and retired at the age of 62. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having attained the rank of Staff Sergeant, and served in the Southwest Pacific Theatre with the 20th Infantry Regiment during WWII. He was awarded several decorations including the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievement in ground combat against the armed enemy and the Purple Heart Medal for wounds received in action. He was a member of the 20th Infantry Reserves, the National Rifleman’s Association, and the AARP. He was an avid Cardinal baseball fan. He loved visiting with friends and always had a pack of gum to share. He was also known to be a teller of tall tales. Survivors include three daughters; Linda Hymes of Tioga, IL, Susan Gilbert of Keokuk, IA, and Sara Kniffen of Vermillion, SD, one son; John Peterie of Cedar Rapids, IA, six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, nieces & nephews, numerous cousins, and many friends. He was preceded in death by two brothers; Lester and Keith Peterie, two sons-in-law, one great-grandson, and one niece.
